Academics Applying Interventionist Research to Deal with Wicked and Complex Societal Problems

This commentary presents reflections and insights about the role legitimacy of academics applying interventionist research to deal with wicked complex societal problems. It discusses ethical moral dilemmas position researchers when they are asked observe, analyse study conflictual social phenomena in which immersed. Starting from a project Italy on socio-economic impact evaluation megaprojects, this wants bring academic community several open questions arising issues that all us scholars have face. First, applied case, i.e. Turin-Lyon high-speed railway, challenge associated – developing protocol– described. Second, implications for researchers, their legitimacy, discussed. Third, three pillars strategy adopted intervention detailed: interparadigmatic research, critically performative aim, commitment emancipation through politics small wins. Finally, conclusion, boundaries risk selfishness, or quest objectivity, reported up debate its within conflicting phenomena.
